During its ongoing eWays online event, Renault has unveiled the Megane eVision, a battery-powered hatchback with some coupe and SUV traits. The company claims that the next-generation Megane – which is due in production in late 2021 – will look 95% like this.
Renault CEO Luca de Meo commented that the Megane lineup used to consist of three- and five-door hatchbacks, a sedan, a convertible, a wagon and a compact MPV called the Scenic. The new iteration will also come in a variety of body styles, including crossover SUV, but they will all be electric.
At 4.21 meters (13.81 feet) long, the concept is 120 mm (4.7 inches) shorter than the current-gen Megane. It utilizes the CMF-EV architecture of the Nissan Ariya, which Renault intends to use for its other vehicles in the future.
Powering the Megane eVision is an ultra-compact electric motor good for 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW). The battery is one of the world’s thinnest designs and can hold up to 60 kilowatt-hours of power. The drive is on the front axle, and the curb weight amounts to just 1,650 kg (3,637 lbs). Reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill is a matter of less than eight seconds.
The fifth-gen Renault Megane will ship with different motors and battery sizes to choose from, the company reports.
