Automaker Rivian has sent its all-electric pickup R1T to a harsh test in Hell’s Gate, one of the most dreaded off-road trails in Moab Desert, Utah. Watch the video to see how it fared.
The company emphasizes that the EV was stock except only for the tires. As you can see, the on-board torque vectoring control software does an excellent job preventing sliding and cross-axling.
The exact specifications of the car that underwent the trial are unknown, but the Rivian R1T comes equipped with four motors rated from 407 PS (401 hp / 300 kW) to 763 PS (752 hp / 561 kW), depending on the modification. The torque sums up to 1,118 Newton-meters regardless of the powertrain. The top spec can reach 97 km/h (60 mph) in around three seconds.
Rivian was the first among U.S.-based electric truck manufacturers to start production in mid-September, coming ahead of Tesla, Ford and General Motors. The range-topping $75,000 Launch Edition hit the market first with maxed-out powertrain and interior.
