The all-electric Rivian R1S SUV and R1T pickup have received mid-generational updates in North America. Preordering has already begun.
There are four powertrains in total. The two affordable trims use two motors rated at either 540 PS (533 hp / 397 kW) or 674 PS (665 hp / 496 kW) depending on your choice – same as before.
Things get much more exciting with the three-motor version, which receives a healthy boost to 862 PS (850 hp / 634 kW) and 1,495 Nm (1,103 lb-ft). Opting for it lets you launch your SUV or truck from zero to 96.6 km/h (60 mph) in a crazy 2.9 seconds.
And then there’s the flagship spec with 1,039 PS (1,025 hp / 764 kW) and 1,624 Nm (1,198 lb-ft) of torque. It reduces the sprint time to 2.5 seconds and proceeds to reach 130 km/h (80 mph) in another 1.5 seconds.
Rivian claims that the facelifted R1 lineup makes use of two new battery types with improved thermal regulation. Depending on your choices, the range can now vary from 415 to 676 km (from 258 to 420 miles). The suspension has been upgraded with new air cushions and shocks, and the old wheels have been replaced with low-drag 22-inch rims.
The entire electronics has undergone a major overhaul. For one thing, the company says it has managed to remove nearly 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of wiring from the car simply by minimizing the number of electronic control units (ECUs). The self-driving system now scans the area three times as far ahead as the original and commands 250 TOPS of computing power. Camera resolution has been improved 8x all around and the software received AI-powered features.
As you may have noticed, both vehicles stay nearly the same as far as the looks are concerned. There are a few new finish options, improved headlights – and that would be it. Inside, there is a new audio system, enhanced ambient lighting, and an electrochromic sunroof with adjustable opacity.
Rivian is already accepting orders for all versions of the R1T and R1S except the quad-motor flagship, which is scheduled for later. Prices range from $69,900 to $105,900 with the entry-level specs staying at the same price point and the top specs going up slightly.
