A fire erupted at the Rivian manufacturing complex in Normal, Illinois on Sunday night, engulfing a parking lot with finished EVs ready for shipment. Around 50 new vehicles were affected, 30 of them confirmed to have been completely destroyed.
The firefighter brigades that responded to the call were able to douse the fire by Sunday midnight, but stayed at the site to prevent any new incidents. Electric cars have battery cells that, once they are damaged, present a constant risk of fire unless fully discharged.
According to the media reports, no employees were injured in the incident and no buildings or structures were damaged.
