These 4 Rolls-Royce convertibles were once the most expensive of all

Sotheby’s will soon attempt to auction off four highly exclusive convertibles built with the Rolls-Royce Camargue Coupe (see video) as the starting point.

The Camargue Coupe came out in 1975 and stayed in production until 1986, remaining the single most expensive RR vehicle on offer throughout its entire lifecycle. Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina helped conceptualize its design, but encountered harsh criticism from the conservatively minded fans of the marque.

The two-door coupe cost £29,250 back at the time, which roughly translates into £247,000 in modern prices with the inflation taken into account. For the first time on record in the automotive industry, the luxury car had a multi-zone climate control system. It also boasted an original radiator grille design with a 7-degree inclination.

Each Camargue came powered by a gas-hungry V8 with 6.75 liters of displacement, 260 hp (194 kW) and 540 Nm (400 lb-ft) of torque.
