Rolls-Royce has announced a black list that it will update with the names of people who bought its Spectre electric coupe only to flip it for profit. The statement comes from Car Dealer quoting Rolls-Royce CEO Thorsten Müller-Ötvös. It looks like the dealerships beg to differ, though.
According to the top exec, all would-be buyers of the luxury EV are screened for integrity prior to purchase. Should the manufacturer see through the customer’s intent to resell the car on the secondary market and profit from the limited supply, they will be immediately be blacklisted and prohibited from ever owning a Rolls-Royce.
However, Tom Hartley – a London-based seller of used premium vehicles – said in an interview to the newspaper that the warning would accomplish nothing in practical terms. He explained that those willing to fork over several hundred thousand dollars for a car are supposed to be free to decide for themselves what to do with their purchase. Furthermore, some owners might face a financial crisis or another situation that might force them into selling their luxury possessions.
Hartley pointed out that he agreed to buy two Spectre EVs from their owners at a premium of £50,000 per each. He expects to take hold of the cars within the initial two weeks of production. He admits that his intention is to make money on reselling these cars further and believes that fashion is too fleeting to get stuck up on such things.
