Check out Dyson’s electric SUV that was never to be

Back in 2014, British household appliance maker Dyson started the development of its very own electric car. The project was kept secret, but was ultimately deemed not viable for the mass market and shelved. Here are the relevant patent shots.

Famous tycoon James Dyson has invested £500,000,000 into the project but decided to abandon it in the fall of 2019, when the SUV was nearly ready for production. He found that there was no way to make it cost below £150,000 for the end buyer – it was the minimum viable price – and it was simply too much for most potential buyers. Dyson emphasizes that the car itself turned out good.

The never-released Dyson N526 had doors that opened against the traffic, a rather short hood, no grille, compact LED lights built into two square sections, pushdown door handles, ten-spoke, and small cameras instead of side mirrors.

According to Dyson, the car weighed in at roughly 2.6 metric tons (5,732 lbs). Its dual engine setup gave it around 543 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) of power, taking it from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds and then all the way up to 200 km/h (124 mph). The traction battery was supposed to grant it up to 965 kilometers (600 miles) of range on a charge.
