Unique Saab prototype goes on sale

A one-off vehicle named Saab EX will cross the auction block in Europe on October 8, expected to fetch between €60,000 and €90,000. It was built by Per Ekstrøm, a car repairman and fan of the Swedish automaker, who closely collaborated with Saab and was able to source OEM components for most units. The car is completely certified and street-legal.

In his project, Ekstrøm wanted to embody the main advantages of all post-WWII Saab vehicles. He started off with a 9000 CC chassis made in 1987, restoring it after a road incident and giving it new 900 II-inspired bodywork. He borrowed the rearview mirror from the Saab 900 convertible and the wheel arches from the 9000 CS, and took some other details from other models. He also chopped the roof by about 3 cm (1.2 inches) and shortened the wheelbase, but left enough room for four passengers inside.

Power for the unique build comes from a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine rated at 223 PS (220 hp / 164 kW). Despite having 154,000 km (95,691 miles) on the odo, the car is said to be in excellent condition. It has a special VIN number and is currently approved for public roads.

Based on the photos, the seller is offering a scale replica of the exotic car along with the full-size thing. It looks like Ekstrøm had experimented around with scale models of his dream car before committing to the project.
