Maxus, a sub-brand of SAIC Group, has designed a body-on-frame SUV for China called the Territory. The newcomer is 80 mm (3.2 inches) larger than the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, and will celebrate its public debut at the Chengdu show in late August. Sales will start later this year.
Buyers will be able to choose between five, six and eight seats. According to patent data uploaded to China’s Ministry of IT website, the SUV will come in two main sizes: 5,046 mm (standard) and 5,214 mm (stretched). The width, height and wheelbase are identical between the two at 2,016, 1,876 and 2,950 mm, respectively.
The Territory runs on the same technical underpinnings as the 2020 Maxus D90 Pro (see video). It also utilizes the same 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine rated at 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. Unlike the D90 Pro, which had a petrol turb-four engine as well, the Territory looks like it could go diesel-only – at least for the time being. The only transmission mentioned in the patent data is eight-speed automatic.
We would expect the model to make use of the same AWD system with a hard coupling on the front axle and a transfer case. The D90 Pro is also available in RWD flavor with spring-based suspension and a solid beam in the back; it remains to be seen which of these features the Territory will inherit.
One final spec known to date is towing capacity: up to 2.5 metric tons, or approximately 5,500 pounds. Price-wise, we expect the Territory to cost more than the D90 Pro, which ranges between 179,800 and 309,800 Yuan on its home market.
