Scotland getting its own rugged and pricey e-SUV ready to roll overseas

Munro, a Scotland-based automaker founded in 2019, intends to expand to the markets of Europe and the United States with a no-frills SUV offering good power at premium pricing.

The vehicle called simply ‘EV’ resembles Hummer classics on the outside with its flat paneling, sharp angles and bulky dimensions. The frame is stainless steel, but the bodywork is all aluminum for extra weight savings. The suspension and brakes make use of mass-market car parts to reduce costs and simplify maintenance.

Power comes from an electric motor rated at 380 PS (375 hp / 279 kW), which drives all four wheels through a reduction gear, solid-beam axles and differential locks. Short overhangs all around ensure good overlanding performance, and the manufacturer says the wading depth maxes out at 1 meter (3.3 feet).

An 80.1-kWh traction battery grants the off-roder 270 kilometers (167 miles) of mixed-cycle driving, or 16 hours of off-roading. The car can carry up to 1 metric ton (2,200 lbs) and tow trailers weighing up to 3.5 tons (7,700 lbs).

The base price is tentatively estimated at £65,000. In 2023, the company plans to sell only 50 units, but hopes to reach 5,000 units per year by the beginning of the next decade.
