Video: Brace up, then watch an airbag-free supercar destroyed in a crash test

U.S.-based automaker Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus has posted footage from a crash test of its new 004S model. According to Muscle Cars & Trucks, CEO James Glickenhaus is determined to design a road-legal supercar without airbags.

The company points out that the test did not end with the head-on impact test. Afterwards, the team suspended the car upside down to see if any liquids would leak. Apparently, the engineering department was happy to hear the results.

SCG bets on constructing the car body in an innovative way with special crumple zones and an injury-safe steering column that disappears inside the front panel immediately upon impact, minimizing the pressure exerted on the driver’s chest. The company has been testing this unit separately, modeling a number of situations, including scenarios in which the driver is not bucked up.

The SCG 004s passed its first crash tests in May 2021. The company revealed back then that it was going to keep the test count down to a minimum because of sheer manufacturing expenses. Glickenhaus said it would be perfect to get everything right with just one crash test. Judging by the continued tests, however, it still looks like a work in progress.

In its road-worthy guise, the carbon-fiber supercar will offer three seats (the driver sits at the front middle position) and a 5.0-liter V8 rated at 650 PS (641 hp / 478 kW).
