Cupra announces new crossover model, could be coupe-SUV

A top manager of Seat said the company was working on a new crossover vehicle. He refused to provide any details, including the body type of the car, but industry experts say it might be a coupe-SUV. The series will premiere in 2019 and go on sale in 2020.

According to Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Seat’s design director, the series will get a 100% original design while still using Volkswagen engines and chassis. It may become the basis for a “full-fledged Seat car” in the future.

The company’s first and so far only release was the Cupra Ateca, which came driven by a 2.0L gasoline engine with 300 hp (224 kW) and a 7-speed DCT. Compared to the model it was based upon, it had a new radiator grille design, different bumpers and a new exhaust system.

Seat had been releasing performance versions of cars with the “Cupra” suffix for over 20 years before the name became a separate brand in 2018. The other two Cupra releases planned for the nearest future are essentially performance versions of Seat Ibiza and Arona.
