Seat says there will be no Cupra Ibiza

It is official: Axel Andorff, Chief Engineer at Seat, has debunked rumors about the upcoming Cupra version of the Ibiza hatchback.

The rumors began straight after the fifth generation of the hatchback came out. A month later, car spotters have tracked down and photographed a Cupra Ibiza test mule. Ultimately, the company brought it as a concept car to the Geneva Motor Show, leaving many reassured that there will be a production run (watch the video and peek inside our gallery for more info).

However, according to the latest statement issued by Axel Andorff, the project has since been put on hold with no money or time invested into it anymore. In other words, we should not be expecting the Cupra Ibiza to come out – whether soon or at all.

He also hinted that the Arona SUV stood better overall chances at putting on the Cupra badge next. If such an SUV came out soon, it would have to compete with the likes of the Ford Puma ST and the Hyundai Kona N.
