Skoda brings its cheapest SUV model to China

Czech car maker Skoda has come to the Auto China 2018 with an all-new SUV called the Kamiq, allegedly the most affordable compact crossover model in the entire lineup. The company hopes to use aggressive pricing to maximize sales and gain ground on the Asian market.

The all-wheel-driven Skoda Kamiq uses the same PQ25 platform earlier Fabia and Rapid were based upon. It packs a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 100 hp (75 kW) and 150 Nm (110 lb·ft) of torque.

The Chinese automobile market generates most of Skoda vehicle sales. Once the Kamiq is out, it is expected to provide worthy competition to the Nissan Kicks, Citroen C3-XR and Hyundai ix25 in their price segment.

Europe will be getting another Skoda model instead, the one built on the MQB platform and based on the Skoda Vision X Concept. When the latter debuted at the recent Geneva International Motor Show, it featured a hybrid drivetrain composed of a 1.5-liter, 130-hp turbocharged CNG engine and a 27-hp electric motor.
