Skoda Superb facelift brings along new and improved tech

Skoda has revealed its facelifted Superb series at a private event in Slovakia. Let us see what differentiates the new liftback and estate/wagon from their old counterparts.

The 2020 model sports a new front bumper, a larger radiator grille, and LED-based Skoda Crystal Lighting headlights that consist of four LED elements and integrated turn blinkers. The lights also incorporate special LED stripes that are part of Skoda’s newest Follow-Me-Home feature.

The interior greets the viewer with new seat upholstery and chrome trim elements on the doors, center console, and dashboard. By default, the 2020 Skoda Superb will ship with the keyless start-and-go feature. The more expensive trim versions will additionally get vented/massage seats.

Both the estate and the liftback can now automatically park themselves on a sideline in case of an emergency, select the optimal drive mode based on the current road surface, and follow the speed regime by reading the relevant traffic signs with a front-facing camera.

The 2020 facelift will ship with diesel engines varying from 1.6 to 2.0 liters in size and rated between 120 and 190 hp (90 and 142 kW). Transmissions will be six-speed manual and seven-speed DSG. The strongest diesel will be available with an AWD system.

Gasoline engines include a 1.5 TSI rated at 150 hp (112 kW), which you can get with either manual or DSG, and a high-end 2.0-liter unit available in two versions: 190 hp (142 kW) and 272 hp (203 kW). The latter supports AWD and DSG.

For the first time in the history of the flagship model, you will be able to opt for a plug-in hybrid version called the Superb iV. Its drivetrain incorporates a 1.4 TSI engine with 156 hp (116 kW), an electric motor adding 114 hp (85 kW) of its own, and a 13 kWh battery. Rated at 218 hp (163 kW) total output, it offers around 55 kilometers (34 miles) of all-electric range.

The Skoda Superb hybrid ships with a 360-degree camera system, a trailer parking assist, and an engine sound imitator for warning pedestrians and cyclists of the approaching car (which is silent in the all-electric drive mode).

Sales should begin before the end of 2019.
