Smart SUV shows up on patent pics

Smart’s first crossover SUV set to hit production based on the Concept #1 (see video) has appeared on patent images. It looks little different from the show car the company previewed in Munich.

The slim headlights connected with a thin strip are still there, as is the quasi-hovering roof and the unusual c-pillars. The interior with its minimalistic front panel and ‘flowing’ center console also shapes up to be identical to that of the auto show prototype (which had a 12.8-inch touchscreen display on the console). However, whereas the concept had two individual seats in the back row, the production car will probably go with a more conventional bench for three.

Main differences from the preview version include simplified rear doors and visible b-pillars (the concept had suicide rear doors and no central pillars). The bumpers and the radiator grille – which is fake – also look slightly retouched.

The technical parameters of the largest Smart car in history remain to be announced. Chinese automaker Geely, which is responsible for the development of the CUV, said it would be all-electric and using a new, special tech platform. Mercedes-Benz has reportedly designed its exterior along with Geely.
