Smart #3 shows up on sketches

Car manufacturer Smart has confirmed that its second production car as a standalone brand – the SUV named simply the #3 – will debut at the Auto Shanghai show on April 18.

In the meantime, the company co-owned by Mercedes-Benz an Geely posted a handful of sketches of the car. You can check these out in the gallery below and brose further to find the patent images Smart uploaded to the Ministry of Industry and IT database last fall.

Like the Smart #1 (see video), the car was largely designed by Mercedes-Benz. The trademark design was largely kept intact except for larger-than-usual dimensions and a sloped roof. As Chief Design Officer Gordon Wagener put it, the #3 is a ‘sportier, more emotional’ ride.

Based on the patent filings, the Smart #1 is 130 mm longer than the Smart #1 and has 80 mm more wheelbase. It comes based on the same architecture called SEA2 and will be offered in two flavors – RWD with 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) at its disposal and AWD with 428 PS (422 hp / 315 kW) under its command. Per Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, the model will later make it to the Old World countries as well, but the details remain to be revealed.
