The Chinese Ministry of Industry and IT has released some images of the upcoming Smart #5 crossover. Unlike its earliest version revealed at the Beijing Auto Show this April (see video), the current version of the car lacks any rugged and off-road-themed parts.
According to AutoHome.cn, the company’s new all-electric flagship will be coming to the market in a variety of colors and designs to choose from. The patent pics preview the various bumper, wheel and trim options and even provide a sneak peek at a Brabus-badged special edition.
All technical details remain to be revealed. Rumor has it that the SUV will ship in two main variants – RWD and AWD. The former will allegedly be using a single e-motor at the rear axle rated at either 340 or 363 PS (335 or 358 hp; 250 or 267 kW, respectively). The AWD version will add a 224-PS (221-hp / 165-kW) motor at the front end. For the battery, Smart will most likely pick its standard 100-kWh pack WLTP-rated in Europe for 550 km (342 miles) of range.
As the name implies, the Smart #5 isn’t just the most powerful but also the biggest Smart in the family, falling under the “mid-size SUV” category. The patent application says it is 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall, which corresponds to 183.8 x 75 x 66.6 inches. The wheelbase is stated as 2.9 meters, or 113.3 inches. Wheels are supported in sizes from 18 to 21 inches.
