Smart to discontinue production of fossil fuel cars by 2020

Smart, a German car manufacturer and part of Daimler AG, will cease production of any fossil fuel-powered vehicles starting in 2020. The corresponding statement came from Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG.

He went on to specify that all Smart vehicles will henceforth ship with purely electric drivetrains.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that Smart only sells one car model in North America, namely, the ForTwo Electric Drive. Many dealerships refuse to sell all-electric cars unless the legislation of the state they are in provides for tax deductions and other benefits for the owners of such vehicles.

The Smart ForTwo Electric Drive comes with a single 74-horsepower strong electric motor. It takes 11.5 seconds for the car to get going at 100 km/h (60 mph), and it can accelerate to a maximum of 125 km/h (78 mph). Its driving range is estimated at 120 kilometers (75 miles).
