The next generation of the Smart subcompacts will be introduced to the wide audience in the year 2022, says Gordon Wagener, Mercedes-Benz Chief Designer. The design team intends to draw inspiration from the original MINI car series that used to be produced back in the 2000s.
Wagener pointed out that the Smart series has been long enough on the market to ‘grow up a bit’. Once the next generation sees the daylight, the automaker will be releasing a larger Smart to compete in the B-Class.
The current-gen Smart Fortwo and Forfour, which you can see in our gallery and the video here, will be getting a facelift before 2022. Both currently come equipped with 82hp / 61kW electric motors and 17.6kWh batteries. Both sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds and run as far as 159 kilometers (99 miles) on a single charge.
