Smart, a Chinese-German electric vehicle brand co-owned between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, has patented its “Number Two” (#2) city hatchback in China. The proper unveiling remains scheduled for the Paris Motor Show in October, so let’s take a look at the specs that we already have.
Overall, the production-ready Smart #2 looks in line with its concept variant introduced around three months ago (see video). Although billed as an ideological successor to the once-popular Smart ForTwo, it is 56 mm (2.2 inches) longer than its predecessor with the total body length of 2,751 mm (101.2 inches).
Much more importantly, it’s also a lot heavier at 1,130 kilos (2,491 lbs) versus the predecessor’s 750–965 kilos (1,653–2,127 lbs). It remains to be seen how well the EV will handle.
The only powertrain announced so far features an 82-PS (81-hp / 60-kW) electric motor plugged into a 30-kWh battery pack. The range is estimated at 400 kilometers (248 miles), but replenishing the charge from 10 to 80 percent full in possible under 20 minutes, the company claims. Support for the V2L standard lets the Smart #2 share its battery power with external appliances and other vehicles.
