Spanish startup rolls out a battery SUV made of weeds and waste

Liux, a startup firm founded in Spain in March 2021, released the first images of its first production car, an electric SUV called Animal. The concept takes the idea of ‘green mobility’ to the extreme, resulting in a vehicle 90% made of recycled materials and plant matter.

Preorders are already running starting from €39,000. The company positions the car as a crossover, but it looks more like a sporty hatchback with little ground clearance, aggressive bumpers and a bulky rear spoiler. It also has rear-hinged doors at the back row and lacks b-pillars.

The bodywork and chassis will be manufactured from biopolymers based on organic fibers, Liux says. Corkwood and reinforced linen fabric will also find use in the project, and some details will be 3D-printed.

Notwithstanding the lack of interior photos, the company promises us multiple displays inside along with a modern Android-based operating system. An AI will allegedly monitor the relevance of the software installed and automatically apply updates when needed.

In its top spec, the car will pack a rear-axle electric motor rated at 237 PS (234 hp / 174 kW), enough to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in five seconds flat. It will hit its speed ceiling at 200 km/h (124 mph) and have up to 600 km (373 miles) of range on a charge.

However, Liux plans to start production with a more affordable Habitat Edition. This version will command 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW), top out at 180 km/h (112 mph), and run 300 km (186 miles) on a charge.
