Speed racer built from scavenged airplane parts sells for a song

A unique racecar with a body made from a fuel tank of the Douglas F-4 “Phantom” fighter jet has fetched $28,000 USD at an auction in the USA, which sounds like it could be less than the budget for its creation.

The unique vehicle was built for a car-themed TV show on the Discovery Channel. Several teams participated in the project headed by the show host Jesse James. Once the body was complete, a 6.5-liter V8 was placed behind the seats and outfitted with a supercharger to maximize its output. A simple two-speed automatic transmission was entrusted with driving the rear wheels.

Elsewhere, Dutchman axles and Aluma Star Weld Racing wheels assembled from three parts each ensured that the car would be the most efficient accelerating in a straight line. A fully integrated tube-frame was also added for safety and stability reasons. Unfortunately, the listing neglected to mention any power or dynamic performance numbers.
