Following a series of crash tests of the SsangYong Korando conducted by Euro NCAP, the SUV was awarded five out of the maximum five stars for safety, marking a new milestone for its South Korean manufacturer.
In a head-on collision with a non-rigid obstacle (incoming car), the Korando provided excellent protection for the front passenger (adult). The driver mannequin also got away with only minor chest and leg injuries.
In a full frontal collision with a rigid obstacle (concrete wall), the test crew found issues with the protection of the rear passenger’s pelvis: the impact may cause those sitting in the back to slip under the lap belt.
The SsangYong Korando performed remarkably well in side crash tests, protecting the driver from all injury in a simulated collision with a car and only registering an overload in the chest area in a crash against a concrete pole.
Children’s safety and on-board safety aids have both been given very favorable ratings. The only bit of criticism concerned the a-pillars, which were apparently designed in a way that might prove lethal for pedestrians in an accident.
