SSC Tuatara nearly hits 475 km/h, aims for more

SSC North America has reported a new speed record for its hypercar, the Tuatara. The latest attempt saw the coupe accelerate to 474.8 km/h (295 mph), just a little short of the psychological mark of 300 miles per hour.

Let us give a little background first. Larry Caplin, one of the owners of the Tuatara, managed to get it to 455.2 km/h (282.8 mph) last January. The value was averaged across two track runs in the opposite directions. The individual top speeds attained were 450.1 km/h (279.7 mph) and 460.4 km/h (286.1 mph).

Now, Caplin has returned to the track once again and managed to hit the 474.8 km/h mentioned above – albeit only in one direction.

As fast as the Tuatara is, it is nonetheless not alone in class. For example, Hennessey Performance is getting its Venom F5 ready to reach 500 km/h (310 miles per hour). Koenigsegg expects its Jesko Absolut to become the world’s fastest production car in history with the top acceleration currently estimated at 532 km/h (330.6 mph).
