Study shows that 15% new cars in the UK will be electric in 2022

Consulting company New AutoMotive has found that every seventh car bought in Great Britain next year will be fully electric, which corresponds to a share of 15%, or around 300,000 units.

This implies that battery cars may become more popular than diesel ones. In 2020, EVs claimed 6% of the market, but their share rose to 11% over the past year. As for the reasons, the UK intends to ban new ICE cars completely by 2030.

This is not to say that the government is satisfied with the electrification speed. It believes that 300,000 EVs versus 32,000,000 ice cars is a proverbial drop in the bucket. This is why the authorities will be forcing automakers to sell EVs targeting a percent share, rather than unit count.

According to New AutoMotive, issues slowing down automotive electrification are diverse. For one, there is still not enough EV infrastructure for this type of transports to be suitable for everyone. For another, customers in the UK had their EV benefits cut in half over 2021, which is also inconsistent with the claimed goals.
