The Japanese car manufacturer Subaru has said it would announce a new hybrid car that could be charged at a regular wall socket before the end of the year. To that end, Subaru has obtained licenses for many of the units and technological solutions implemented in the Toyota Prius Prime.
According to Takeshi Tachimori, technical director of the project, the car is being mainly designed for the U.S. market where there’s a government-stimulated demand for environmentally clean vehicles. He also stressed that, even though the company does rely on its competitor’s tech in many aspects of the new car, its engine has been substantially improved.
He gave no exact figures to support that claim. The hybrid engine of Toyota Prius Prime consists of a 1.8-liter gasoline engine that outputs 97 hp, an electric motor which adds another 73 hp, and a battery set for an all-electric driving range of up to 35 kilometers (21.5 miles).
