The two Japanese automakers will unveil a jointly designed car during an online event on Monday, April 5, 2021. The teaser pic tells us nothing about the car, but a number of execs attending the event promise to tell us something interesting about the alliance’s past.
The involvement of Gazoo Racing tells us that the mystery newcomer could turn out none other than the second-gen GT86 coupe. Its Subaru-badged clone – the BRZ – debuted last November, and you can have a better look at it in the attached video. Rumors from several days ago claimed that Toyota had postponed the launch of the second generation until next year, but these can be proven false.
As for the name, sources are reporting that the next GT will be called ‘GR 86’ to emphasize its link with the high-performance GR Yaris and GR Supra models.
There is another candidate for reveal as well: an e-TNGA based electric crossover SUV scheduled for show debut at the Auto Shanghai 2021 in late April. That one already has a Toyota badge on it, so perhaps Subaru will be unveiling its own version named Evoltis (as per the recently registered trademark). The new car could be similarly sized to the Forester and arrive in a year or two.
Of course, all of this is pure conjecture at this point. We expect more information before the April 5 event, though, so stay tuned!
