2nd-gen Subaru BRZ goes on sale in Japan

Following the unveiling of its new BRZ coupe last fall, Subaru has now begun shipping it on the domestic market. Here are all the details.

The coupe comes based on an updated chassis and tech of its predecessor, but benefits from 50% improved torsional rigidity thanks to a different body construction.

The radiator grille now sits higher up than before, and the exterior trim details cater for a more expressive overall image. The sculpted roofline reminds us a bit about the ‘double bubble’ designs of some older racecars, and the lights are LED-based all around. The gill-like slits in the front fenders redirect the heat from under the wheel wells and the hood to the side skirts, which improves downforce.

At 4,265 mm (166.6 inches) long, 1,775 mm (69.3”) wide and 1,311 mm (51.2”) tall with 2,575 mm (100.5”) between the axles, the new generation is slightly larger than the old one. The roof, hood and fenders are now made of aluminum, but the curb weight still manages to be 7.7 kilos (17 lbs) higher than before at 1,307 kg (2,882 lbs). On a plus side, it is now distributed more efficiently for a lower center of gravity.

Power comes from a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine rated at 228 PS (225 hp / 168 kW). You can choose between six-speed manual and automatic, the latter coming with handy paddle shifters.

The base trim version is called R, has 17-inch wheels shod in 215/45 tires, and costs from ¥3,080,000 with the stick shift. Opt for automatic, and you will be looking forward to spending ¥3,245,000. A higher spec named S offers 18-inch rollers, 215/40 tires, leather in the cabin, heated front seats, and aluminum décor. It starts from ¥3,267,000 manual and ¥3,432,000 automatic.
