Subaru and Toyota has been partners for a long time, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the two companies said they would join efforts on the next generation of the WRX sports car.
Toyota engineers are already busy designing a new drive system called the Super AWD. Chances are good that it will utilize some of the tech found in the racecar version of the Toyota Yaris. The architecture is also under development.
Just what body styles the WRX will ship in remains unclear at this moment, although rumors hint that ‘sedan/saloon and coupe’ is the likeliest option. The first-gen Impreza WRX shipped in four-door and two-door versions, the latter derived from the former.
Whatever the case, we will not be seeing the new WRX until at least 2021. In other news, Subaru has recently dropped its legendary-but-outdated EJ20 engine from production. The carmaker marked the milestone by releasing a special series entitled the WRX STi EJ20 Final Edition (see the gallery and the video). The production run consists of 555 sedan/saloon vehicles featuring 300 hp (224 kW), manual transmission, blue paint, gold-tinted wheels, and special badges.
