“New” Gymkhana car may not be new, but it packs 900 HP

Travis Pastrana, who hosts the Gymkhana show now that Ken Block deserted for Audi, will be filming the next episode behind the steering wheel of this 1983 Subaru GL. Subaru released the corresponding announcement and the images.

Responsible for the build is the same Hoonigan team as always, with the carmaker providing assistance. By the look of it, the GL received a full body kit with impressive bumpers and widened arches, a new radiator grille, lighter glass all around, and wheels shod in Yokohama semi-slicks (Ken Block favored Toyo Tires). A brand livery rounds things off with style.

Technical parameters remain largely undisclosed – we do not even know what kind of engine powers the car. In the first half of the 1980s, the Subaru GL was produced with a 1.8-liter engine rated at around 70 horsepower. The modded example, however, pumps out nearly 900 horsepower. It is the only number disclosed so far.

According to Pastrana, the boxy body of the car provides an undisputable advantage to the driver, who intuitively feels its dimensions and thus enters curves and performs stunts much easier than with a curvier vehicle.

The premiere date of the new Gymkhana remains to be announced. The first episode starring Pastrana debuted in December 2020 (see video).
