Subaru has posted the first photo of its upcoming update to the Outback series. The off-road-going estate/wagon will premiere at the New York Auto Show starting in a few days.
Details about the new Subaru Outback are few and far between. Rumors say the car makes a switch to SGP, the new modular-based architecture the current-gen Forester is based upon. Aside from offering better protection against noise and vibration, the new chassis is said to make the overall driving experience more comfortable. The platform switch should entail no major design changes, industry observers claim.
The new Outback will no longer be available with the 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine. Instead, it will now ship with a 2.4-liter, opposite-cylinder, turbocharged Ascent engine rated at 264 hp (197 kW) and 376 Nm (277 lbft) of torque. Another option is a hybrid based on a 2.0-liter gas engine with 150 hp (112 kW) and a small-time electric motor contributing around 17 hp (13 kW) of its own. The latter version will be available with an iVT.
