6th-gen Subaru Outback reaches Japan at last

Subaru launched its next-gen Outback wagon in the United States nearly two and a half years ago, and in Europe shortly afterwards, but is has not been available on its domestic market of Japan until now.

Dubbed the Subaru Legacy Outback in this country, it comes with a right-hand-drive system and a different, less powerful engine. Specifically, customers in Japan will have to make do with the same 1.8-liter turbocharged mill as the Levorg and the local Forester models, rated at only 177 PS (175 hp / 130 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque. This engine will be available exclusively with a CVT and AWD.

In contrast, other countries also get a few 2.5-liter naturally aspirated options and a 2.4-liter turbo, the latter maxing out at 263 PS (259 hp / 193 kW) and 376 Nm (277 lb-ft) of torque.

JC80-rated mixed-cycle fuel consumption amounts to 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers, while WLTP-rated consumption is notably higher at 7.69l / 100km. The Euro-spec Subaru Outback 2.5 consumes 8.6l / 100 km (WLTP), while the US-spec Outback 2.4T burns 7.84l / 100 km (EPA).

In its simplest form, the car comes with a range of EyeSight electronic aids, Harman Kardon audio, and Nappa leather. Trim options include black, grey and brown, and there are various other modern niceties to opt for, such as a sunroof.
