Subaru has issued an official statement confirming the rumors that the next-generation WRX will debut on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. Apparently, we are in for something special, too.
As the spy photos and teaser images suggest, the sporty sedan will look more or less the same as the current generation. Stick-shift drivers will also appreciate to know that manual remains an option in the new generation. Other powertrain specifics remain to be revealed, but we expect the new WRX to make use of a 2.4-liter FA24 engine turbocharged to 304 PS (300 hp / 224 kW) or so.
Should the sedan indeed debut with more than 300 horsepower at the crank, its performance-boosted STI version can be expected to ramp it up to 350, if not 400, likely achieved by applying higher boost pressure to the same FA24 four-cylinder.
The original launch date was set on August 19, but was pushed back a few weeks after the cancellation of the 2021 New York International Auto Show.
