According to unconfirmed sources, the next-gen Subaru WRX and WRX STI will both come based on the 2.4-liter flat-four engine of the second-gen BRZ model, albeit in a turbocharged form for some added thrust.
Specifically, the STI performance spec may jump from its current 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) to around 350 PS (345 hp / 257 kW). The regular WRX is expected to go from 268 PS (264 hp / 197 kW) to around 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW).
The next generation will resemble the Viziv Performance STI Concept with its boomerang-shaped headlights, large hood scoop, and elaborate rear wing (see video). A teaser pic posted by the manufacturer in late June suggests a modest body kit. As for the cabin, a large tablet-like infotainment touchscreen is high on our list of expectations.
The mass-market WRX STI will debut early next summer, with the standard WRX set to launch sooner than that. The duo will be the marque’s last ICE sport sedans before going hybrid.
