The Subaru WRX STI never lived to see the next generation, but the Australian office of the brand is now considering producing a local spin-off of the performance car.
In an interview with Drive, a representative of the company admitted that such a special edition was still in the talks and the company was listening closely to its customers’ requests. Should there be enough demand, the next-gen STI will be given the green light.
He also pointed out that multiple discussions were ongoing with the Subaru Corporation and the STI subdivision in particular. When asked directly whether there was a real chance of the car making it to the market Down Under, he replied unambiguously, “Yes.”
According to Drive, he Subaru HQ is currently looking for ways to make the new WRX STI viable. Designing it with a hybrid powertrain could be the key.
