Subaru teases a mystery car, could be the next WRX spin-off

Subaru has shared a teaser pic previewing a car it will be bringing to the Tokyo Auto Salon in early January. There are no details yet, but it looks like another WRX special is coming soon. Could it be a new flagship spec with the STI suffix attached?

Judging by the badges, the car is based on the WRX S4 STI Sport, a mildly tweaked WRX currently available in Japan. Subaru promised us a more hardcore version of it a while ago from its Tecnica International division. If you look closer, there is also a small spoiler on the trunk lid.

The usual Tokyo Auto Salon exhibits are tuned concept cars with no production prospects. However, Subaru announced a little while ago that its next car to debut would get a limited production run. Some time before, representatives of the company had said there were no plans for a full-fledged WRX STI release.

The Tokyo show will be held on January 12–14, but we expect new sedan to be revealed a few days in advance, as usual.

The latest Subaru WRX generation debuted a couple of years ago with a 2.4-liter engine sending 271 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) to all four wheels through either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT.
