WIP: Maruti Suzuki’s new compact crossover SUV

The Indian branch of Suzuki will be unveiling an affordable compact crossover/SUV called the S-Presso on its domestic market on September 30.

The car will be based on the Future-S Concept revealed a year ago (see the gallery and the video). Car photographers spotted it in a test mule guise this spring, but we did not know back then just what it was.

Suzuki will most likely assemble the production vehicle using the same Heartect architecture it uses for all other current models. The car will be 3,565 mm (11.7 ft.) long, 1,520 mm (5 ft.) wide and 2,380 mm (7.81 ft.) tall with 180 mm (7 inches) of ground clearance.

The car will be shipped with a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine on board. Its output amounts to 68 hp (51 kW) and 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) of torque in other Suzuki models. Customers will get a choice between five-speed manual and robotic transmission, but the front wheel drive will be the only one available.

Contrary to what you might think, this is not the cheapest Suzuki vehicle on the Indian market. That title is claimed by the Alto hatchback. Earlier rumors claimed the Alto would be discontinued with the arrival of the new affordable SUV, but these proved false when the Alto received a facelift this spring.
