Suzuki Ignis update for Japan brings new SUV version, more options

Suzuki has refreshed its Ignis range for Japan. While only different in terms of Jimny-like grille and new rear bumper on the outside, it comes with some technical novelty.

The front seats in the most basic trim are now heated, and automatic emergency brake is included in all trims. A new spec called Hybrid MF has emerged, boasting an SUV-like appearance with silvery bumper inserts, black fenders and sills, and roof railings. All of this has been available in higher Europe trims for a while, but it is new in Japan.

Powertrain-wise, the domestic spec is a mild hybrid based on a 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine with 91 hp (68 kW) and 118 Nm (87 lb-ft). An engine starter linked to a dedicated battery provides more torque when it is most needed. The drive is on the front axle by default, but you may even choose AWD. The transmission is continuously variable.

Changes inside are minimal. The dashboard has been restyled, the trunk compartment is now better protected against mold and dirt, and the rear door pockets are no longer a paid option.

Suzuki expects to sell at least 1,500 units per month nationwide. Ignis specs sold in Europe, India and Indonesia will also be refreshed later.

In Europe, the current-gen Ignis has sold poorly lately, with only 38,091 units in 2019 (down 5,683 from 2018).
