Indian automotive giant Tata has unveiled a new battery subcompact called Tiago.ev. The hatchback-shaped urban ride starts as low as 849,000 Rupees, or $10,400.
The powertrain incorporates a front-axle motor producing 74 PS (73 hp / 54 kW) and 114 Nm (84 lb-ft) of torque and a small traction battery obtainable in sizes from 19.2 to 24 kilowatt-hours. The MIDC-rated driving range for these two sizes amounts to 255 and 315 kilometers, respectively (158 and 195 miles).
The company seems in no hurry to provide 0-100 km/h sprint times, but it is official that the Tiago.ev needs 5.7 seconds to go from zero to 60 km/h (37 mph). The top speed is likewise not stated anywhere, and affordable EVs are known for being slow on the highway.
The manufacturer provides a warranty on the powertrain valid for eight years or 160,000 kilometers (~99,000 miles) of range, whichever comes first. According to Tata, it is expecting massive amounts of customer interest and feedback, because this is the first time in history India puts a full-fledged electric hatchback on its streets – and a very wallet-friendly one, at that.
