Tesla reveals major updates for the Model S, X

Tesla is getting a major mid-generational refresh ready for the Model S liftback and its same-platform SUV counterpart, the Model X. This is by far not the first update of the series – in fact, both vehicles receive minor enhancements more or less constantly – but the scope of improvement is larger this time around.

First, Tesla promises about 10% more driving range for all owners of Long Range trim versions. In the case of the liftback, this means an increase in range from the standard 335 miles (540 kilometers) to almost 375 mi (600 km). Interestingly enough, the capacity of the traction battery remains unchanged, while the engines get a boost in terms of both horsepower and torque. It is a bit of a pity that Tesla does not reveal any exact numbers to go by, but those could be announced later.

Reportedly, both vehicles will also benefit from substantial suspension improvements. The company aims to make the front suspension softer and the rear one stiffer. It also introduces a number of additional parameters that the adaptive shock absorber system of the car will monitor at all times, including satellite navigation data.

The refreshed series will enter production in a few days and is already available to pre-order. A Model S Long Range costs U.S. $88,000. Oh, and U.S. $78,000 still buys you the cheaper Standard Range trim that Tesla promised to discontinue some time ago. If you’d rather go for the updated Model X Standard Range, that would be U.S. $83,000.
