Elon Musk says Tesla cars could think 21x quicker

Talking with his subscribers, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has revealed a few details about his company’s plans. Among other things, he said Tesla did not intend to update its current EV range like other manufacturers do. Instead, the company planned to replace the CPUs used by the Autopilot feature with much more powerful ones.

As it stands right now, most Tesla EVs ship with NVidia processors on board. However, the company has since designed its own CPU module called FSD (Fast Self-Driving), which some Model S and X’s are already taking advantage of.

The Tesla FSD combines two powerful CPUs on a single motherboard. Their resulting performance is said to be 21 times as high as NVidia’s. The module is used exclusively for the in-house-designed Autopilot feature. All customers who have earlier purchased the full Tesla Autopilot package will be able to get the upgrade free of charge.

The migration to the Tesla FSD board will begin before the end of 2019, so stay tuned.
