As you may remember, Elon Musk said in early 2021 that a completely autonomous driving system would become available for Tesla cars later in the year. As the company’s latest report shows, this is not shaping up to be true.
The company let its select employees test-drive the FSD system for themselves last fall, claiming it was nearly ready for production. However, a few months ago California authorities said the EV maker was playing up its technological advances, calling an “SAE Level 5” what was essentially an SAE Level 2 autopilot tech that needs constant attention from the driver.
Multiple experts used this opportunity to remind everyone that overestimating the system’s capabilities can lead to tragic consequences. In response, some Tesla car owners in China even began installing pedal-watching video cameras in their cars to be able to prove afterwards that it was the Autopilot that crashed their EV.
