Tesla vows to launch a truly affordable EV in 2 years

The Tesla Model 2 is a battery-powered hatchback envisioned as the new entry-level Tesla designed primarily for Europe. When (if?) it ships in 2023, it will mainly have to compete against the Volkswagen ID.3.

According to the carmaker, the model will start as low as €23,000 in the old world thanks to being built around a new battery tech. The new power cell type is still under development, but Tesla expects it to be twice as affordable as modern equivalents while extending the range of the car.

Autocar reports that different battery sizes should translate into 400–560 kilometers (248–348 miles) of driving range. An entry spec for Europe might ship with a much smaller battery rated for only 200 or 250 km (124–155 mi) of range to minimize its price.

The Model 3 featured in our gallery here is as affordable as Teslas go today, and it packs a healthy powertrain that starts from 287 PS (283 hp / 211 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque.
