According to Electrek, Tesla Inc. is sending e-mail reminders to the customers who pre-ordered a car, warning them that their orders may be canceled unless they pay the full amount.
Apparently, these letters are largely addressed to those who spent six months or more sitting on their pre-order after receiving a notification that a delivery date was available. In this case, the automaker urges customers to either pick a date soon before their reservation is canceled and their deposit refunded.
The issue allegedly concerns several thousand buyers in the United States. Tesla has a legal policy that enables it to cancel a pre-order if no payment is made within a month after a delivery date becomes available.
For their part, customers often delay their purchase when they are unable to get approval on a loan and hope to be able to get one later. We are told that an earlier policy was for Tesla to deliver the finished car to a different buyer, but keep the pre-order alive and keep suggesting more delivery dates.
The change in policy might have been caused by the impending EV legislation amendments in the USA. New tax incentives set to enter force in 2022 would enable customers to save up to $7,500 USD on their Tesla car purchase if they could afford to wait. It is also evident that the company continues raising prices across the board in an attempt to cut losses. Those who pre-ordered an EV for a smaller amount and had their order canceled will now face much higher prices if they decide to order again.
