Tesla halts its Shanghai production lines due to a Covid outbreak

The Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai was forced to pause production due to a new outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease in the country. The pause will last no less than four days or until every single worker at the factory tests for Covid-19.

Things are bad in Shanghai City proper, too, where a two-stage lockdown is gradually entering into force.

The delay in production may hit Tesla rather hard, considering that the local Gigafactory doesn’t just make electric vehicles for China. Many are exported into Japan and Europe countries. In February alone, the industrial complex churned out 56,500 units.

Several days ago, production started at the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin, where an initial Model Y batch has already shipped. The facility cost €5 billion to build and became Germany’s largest new automotive factory in modern history.
