Electric car maker Tesla plans to open another Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, placing it next to the first one and turning the city into the world’s ultimate exporter of EVs.
No timelines or launch dates has been mentioned so far, but it is official that the factory will proceed to churn out 450,000 vehicles per year. As for the structure of production, Elon Musk plans to make the same cars there as the current Shanghai factory makes – the Model 3 and Model Y. These will be sold in China, Europe in Japan.
In late March, the Gigafactory Shanghai had to suspend production because of yet another Covid-19 outbreak in the country. 22 idle days cost the market as many as 50,000 EVs. Back in 2021, the Gigafactory churned out 484,130 vehicles.
