Tesla launches a quick charge adapter for third-party stations

Tesla EV owners may easily top up their cars’ batteries at Supercharger stations, but using third-party terminals is often problematic. A new charger named CCS eliminates most of the problems.

All four Tesla models are supported, but only cars released in the last few years will work. Tesla invites everyone buying the charger accessory to try it out on the spot to see if it works, and urges users to update their software to the latest version. Once finished, the car will be compatible with virtually all EV charging outlets throughout the United States.

The actual power transmitted will depend solely on the source. The adapter is rated up to 250 kW, meaning it will plug into a more powerful terminal without issue, but won’t charge the car any faster than its rating allows. If the source is weaker than 250 kW, the adapter will not be able to ‘boost’ it, either.

The asking price seems quite reasonable at $250.
