Tesla CEO Elon Musk made another controversial statement in a recent interview, letting it slip that Tesla cars could end up with Level 4 or 5 self-driving tech on board before the end of 2023.
He stressed that it was just an assumption, but said the company came ‘very close’ to designing a fully autonomous driving solution. He also promised that the system would be certifiable by the SAE standard as Level 4 or Level 5. The latter is considered the highest possible level of autonomy.
It is worth pointing out that Tesla’s current FSD implementation is at a modest Level 2. Nevertheless, the EV maker has been delivering cars for years with what it calls the ‘Full Self-Driving’ capability. It is still technically in beta version and has attracted numerous NHTSA complaints, leading to mass recalls.
