NHTSA forces Tesla to recall all U.S.-sold cars made over the past 12 years

Nearly every single Tesla EV assembled for the North American market from 2012 is being recalled, Motor1 reports quoting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The reason is as trivial as improperly designed dash indicators.

For instance, the ABS warning light is smaller than prescribed by the regulations. In theory, this means some drivers may fail to notice it and get into an accident. Tesla has to make the displayed light larger and more conspicuous in order for the cars to be drivable. There are other issues, too, but nothing that cannot be solved with an over-the-air update.

A total of 2,193,869 Tesla vehicles are affected, including light passenger cars, SUVs and the recently released pickup trucks. They all have digital dashboards, so no hardware modifications are necessary. The company says it will push the update remotely to all affected units, eliminating the need to visit a dealership. All the owners need to do is wait until the new firmware comes out and agree to install it.
